It’s mostly about the illustration style. Post 9/11, almost everything about flying has become hyper-serious. The safety cards are essentially life-and-death comic strips that must be designed to clearly convey instructions above all else. Lucky for us, that clarity comes with a lot of other things getting made weird. A single character can seem like many ages, nationalities and genders. Simple motions are greatly exaggerated. Items on vests and clothing and oxygen masks are up for interpretation, and hey, we’ve got HOURS to think about this stuff. And lastly, I think I love them because they are rapidly becoming some of the last tangible ink-on-paper illustrations that most people get to hold with any regularity.
